Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

If you’ve ever fallen off the fitness wagon, then you mat be able to relate to this. Once you miss a few workouts, it’s next to impossible to get started again.

It’s no wonder that this is the time of year when the “glow” of that shiny New Year’s resolution is GONZO.

It sounded like a great idea at the time (3 cocktails in at the holiday office party), but now you are just wallowing in self pity as you realize that you’ve failed AGAIN at trying to get on and maintain a healthy routine.

Don’t give-up hope.

You can get it back. All you need is a good plan and some solid coaching. Here are 3 things you can do today to get yourself back on the healthy fitness track:

#1. Find Your WHY!

You can’t depend on willpower to get motivated. Willpower only goes so far. It may be good for the first week or so, but beyond that, willpower does not work.

What you need are great reasons for WHY you are working out every day and eating healthy. As an example of what I’m talking about, here are my reasons for living a healthy lifestyle:

  1. I don’t want to die…
  2. My wife would like me to stick around and see my kids get married. and have kids of their own…
  3. At age 85, I want to do an Ironman…
  4. “You don’t look 60” is what I want people to say when they meet me…

Those are my reasons for getting up at 3:30am to go for a run before work. Let me suggest that you will never have the motivation to do great things with your health and fitness until you have discovered your WHYs.

So sit down, put pen to paper, and write down your WHYs

#2. Do A Gut Check

Once you’ve created your reasons WHY, then you need to ask yourself if you really care enough to get out of your comfort zone.

  • Are you willing to get out of bed an hour early to exercise?
  • Can you cut-down on the alcohol, or eliminate it all together, so you don’t feel like crap in the morning?
  • On Sunday afternoons, can you prep your meals for the week so you’re not scrambling to eat healthy?

Getting into great shape by exercising and eating healthy everyday doesn’t happen all by itself. Just saying you want to do it doesn’t make it happen. That’s the problem with goal setting. People think that because they’ve set a goal that it will automatically happen.

It doesn’t! YOU have to make it happen, for you, and your family.

#3. Get A Plan

So far, you’ve come up with great reasons WHY you need to do this. You’ve committed to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Now what do you do?

You need a PLAN.

If you think you can “wing-it” when it comes to working-out affectively and eating healthy, think again. It’s time for you to hire an expert, or experts, to help you with this.

First step? Find someone who can help you with your nutrition. Here’s why – Excellent health starts with how you eat, not how much you workout.

Want to see this for yourself? Go to any gym and check out the people who workout and sweat like crazy every day and make NO PROGRESS. Exercise without good nutrition is just being fat with a lot of muscle.

Next, hire a certified personal trainer. Have him or her do an assessment for you and create an exercise program that matches your goals. The good news is that you don’t need to work with the trainer forever. 4 to 6 weeks of training twice a week is all you need to start seeing results, and learn what to do on your own.

Do these 3 things and you will get back on the health and fitness track in no time. As always, I’m here to help. Just let me know what I can do for you by leaving me a comment.
